Drug Execution Rates

Earlier I’ve posted about the rate of executions for drug trafficking this year (and going a bit back into last year).  However, I’d not actually looked at the rate.  I just went and looked over the execution data at captialpunishmentuk.com for the first seven months of this year, and the rate is much higher than I’d have thought:

Month Executions Drugs Rate
Jul-15 77 30 38.96%
Jun-15 137 73 53.28%
May-15 165 75 45.45%
Apr-15 160 73 45.63%
Mar-15 143 52 36.36%
Feb-15 97 45 46.39%
Jan-15 104 49 47.12%
Totals 883 397 44.96%

In the past, I’ve done various models of a U.S. where the execution rate remained around where it was in the 1920’s and 1930’s (average is 1 execution per 880,456 persons – averaged over 1925-1945).  As part of that, I’ve usually included Drug Trafficking as a potential capital crime, at for some states.

However, I don’t think I ever came up with a rate of nearly half of the executions in a given year being for drug trafficking offenses.  If I ever get the program that runs those models working again,  I may have to tweak the rates again.
